Description
The RAF has operated Search and Rescue since 1941, initially with flying boats to rescue Battle of Britain aircrew from the English Channel. Helicopters have been used since the early 50’s. The Royal Navy Search and Rescue started in 1953. The RAF, RN and HM Coastguard helicopters have covered this role since, but this is the end of an era! The role will be privatised with Bristow Helicopters Ltd providing search and rescue helicopter services in the UK commencing progressively from 2015.
